Types of Staircase

A staircase is a necessary platform for a big and tall house. Because, the staircase is a lane that has steps that connect one floor to another floor. Not just houses, we can meet staircases in every tall building. In this article, we will talk about types of staircase.

In the world of interior design, staircases have many variations. Those variations have their own uniqueness. They all look beautiful, but it is necessary to know about variations of staircases, especially for us, common people. So, be wise, before installing staircases for your home, they may suitable or not.

Staircases may have their own uniqueness, but they also have advantages and disadvantages for certain houses. This can be affected by the houses’ size and space, theme, and other aspects of interior design. We have to think hard before installing the staircase. Otherwise, they will not be efficient in mobility.

Straight Stairs

Straight stairs are the most basic shape and form of staircases. The other name of the straight stairs is the linear stairs. The shape has no turning point. This staircase is suitable for a big house, and the staircase should be made large too if you prefer the aesthetic aspect.

Straight stairs are not suitable for a small house, whatever the house theme is minimalist or not. It is because straight stairs can eat a lot of space, which is inefficient for a small and minimalist house. You may reconsider again if you want to install straight staircases for houses.

Straight stairs can be useful for people who prefer doing indoor activity or sport in their house. You can train your legs and build legs’ muscle with straight stairs efficiently. This is what I mentioned about the advantages and disadvantages of staircase variations. With straight staircases, mobility is efficient.

Straight stairs with a central landing

Straight stairs with a central landing are almost the same as regular straight stairs. They eat so much space, and they are not suitable for a small house. But, since they have a central landing, you can be creative about how to use and make them be an advantage.

You can use the central landing for a standing activity, like praying if the central landing isn’t very big. Spacious central landing can be more advantageous for other activities. However, it requires a big and spacious house. To use it properly, you can install this straight staircase in outdoor.

L-shaped stairs

Stairs with a turning point of L-shape are suitable for any house, whether they’re small or not. They eat lesser space than the straight staircase. Because of this, there are a lot of people who like this kind of staircase, especially when your house is small and minimalist theme.

The demerit of this staircase is you can’t do much about the room space under the stair. So that is why people install this kind of staircase attaching to the wall or in the corner. You can add or manage the rest of the room space efficiently with any kind of furniture.

U-shaped stairs

U-shaped stairs are one of the favorite types of staircase. The turning point of this stair is in the opposite position. While the counterpart is turning left or right like the U-shaped stairs. This staircase usually installed in the corner of the room. So we can manage the space efficiently.

The other advantages of this staircase are making functions for other floors, which the commonly used for houses or buildings that have more than two floors. Usually, we can meet this staircase in apartment buildings or other tall buildings as an emergency stair for disasters, like fire or earthquake.

Winder stairs

Winder stairs are a variation of L-shaped stairs. Luckily, they designed to be more aesthetic and comfortable for houses, especially for older houses. Which means they are more suitable for a small or minimalist house. The size of this stair is narrower than a regular L-shaped kind of stairs.

The advantages of this stair are they require lesser space than a regular L-shaped stairs. Also, the design is very aesthetic and fascinating than a regular one. They usually are a secondary stair in older houses, especially to get access to the kitchen in a faster way and efficient way.

Sadly, this kind of stairs is hard to navigate than a regular L-shaped stair. It is because of small design and space. Adding a handrail also difficult to install, but we have to install it to ensure safety. We don’t want any visitor in the house to get hurt.

Spiral stairs

Spiral stairs are one of the most interesting kinds of stairs in the interior designing world. They commonly have an aesthetic and compact design.  The steps are radiating and following a helical arc around a pole, which is a central foundation of this kind of staircase, suitable for a small house.

This kind of staircase eats lesser room space just like the others, more than others. But they are preferring the compactness design. It is thanks to the central pole that acts as the foundation. Means there is no need for other structural supports to install this kind of staircase.

Sadly, spiral stairs are very hard to navigate, more than any other kind of stairs. The shape design is small and tall, which is not suitable for certain people, especially those who are afraid in height. Also, you will find it difficult to carry large things with this stair.

Ladder stairs

Ladder stairs are also one of the common stairs we can meet everywhere. The shape is very simple, can be short or long. This stair doesn’t serve as a primary stair due to certain building codes. But this stair is the most compact and effective staircase you can install.

However, these types of staircase are hard to navigate than an actual stair, especially when you want to go down. This staircase is also dangerous for people who are afraid to height, which is why building codes forbid this kind of stairs to be installed in the building.
